Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight
Followed by mulled wine and sweetmeats
5.30pm Sunday 17 December: St Mary & St John
This service of lessons, choir carols, and congregational singing was devised in the 19th century by the Bishop of Truro, and became popular all over the British Isles, and later the world, when the BBC began broadcasting a form of it annually from King’s College, Cambridge.
Tonight’s service is sung by the Parish Choir of St Mary & St John Church with Aurora Oxoniensis (a choir of young singers from Oxford colleges).
Music by: Praetorius, Vaughan Williams, Cornelius, Palestrina, Biebl, Pearsall, and others, with the world premier of a newly-commissioned work by Tom Dixon based on words of Martin Luther (this year being the 500th anniversary of Luther’s presenting his theses in Wittenberg).
Bring your own candle if you like, or pick one up at the door.
