Bartlemas Carols

poster
Since earliest times the season prior to Christmas, called Advent, has been marked with special observances and devotion. A wealth of plainsong (Gregorian chant) particular to Advent emerged from this devotion, and this medieval but timeless music is sung by men’s voices at this candlelit service. Later many congregational carols and hymns became popular in Advent and these form the congregation’s participation in this sequence of music and readings.
Following the service ‘ypocras’ (the original mulled wine) and sweetmeats are served in the nave of the 14th century chapel. The chapel has no heating – wrap up warm!
