In the 18th century, and into the 19th century, church music-making featured bands of singers and instrumentalists who sang psalms, hymns, and other straighforward music from galleries at the west end end of parish churches. This popular music was very unlike the repertoire of the robed choirs of cathedrals. This was the robust musical world Charles Wesley knew when he wrote his many thousands of hymns, and this hearty concert features hymns and music of this genre pertaining to the feast of Christmas.
