Eucharist (said) of St Stephen the Proto-Martyr
10am Tuesday 26 December: St Mary & St John
St Stephen, a deacon of the early Church, was the first (‘proto’) to be martyred for faith in Christ. His martyrdom is told by St Luke in the Acts of the Apostles ( Acts 7:54-60).
It is fitting that the Feast of Christmas is followed immediately by a martyr’s feast: acknowledging that the fullness of belief in Christ’s incarnation is, in many senses, a costly way of being, and not mere sentimentalism or credulity. This is especially poignant in our world today, where, more than ever, Christians (and others) are being persecuted for their faith. We pray for them in this Eucharist of St Stephen.
