Welcome to the Friends of St Mary & St John Church & Churchyard, a community dedicated to preserving and enhancing our historic church and its beautiful churchyard on Cowley Road, Oxford.
The Friends support the ongoing maintenance and restoration of St Mary & St John, one of the most magnificent and architecturally important Parish Church buildings in East Oxford.
This beautiful and ancient building receives no funding from either the government or the Church of England to support its upkeep.
Our Mission
Founded in 1875 during the Oxford Movement, St Mary & St John Church has a rich history of sacramental liturgy, spiritual formation, and community outreach.
Everyone on Cowley Road appreciates this iconic local treasure. It regularly hosts community events such as concerts, weddings, funerals, fundraising events and local meetings.
150 years of families have had their celebrations, baptisms, weddings and funerals at St Mary & St John, Cowley Road. The churchyard is a popular landmark.
The cost of upkeep often falls to the worshipping congregation but through The Friends a wider representation of current and previous residents are able to contribute to the upkeep and maintenance. It is not just Cowley Road residents who are Friends, we have members from all over the world!
The friends raise funds for repairs, maintenance and restoration of this important church ensuring its legacy for future generations.
Supporting Our Churchyard
Our churchyard is a haven for wildlife and a place of peaceful reflection.
By becoming a Friend, you contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of this vital green space in the heart of Cowley Road.
Community Engagement
